Check a label photo’s location information before sharing it from iPhone

Review location metadata in Photos, use the sharing control, and inspect the actual export instead of assuming a crop removes hidden information.

A close crop can remove the kitchen around a food package while leaving location information associated with the photo. Check the visible picture and the location data as separate parts of preparing a share copy. This guide uses Apple's documented Photos controls; wording can change with iOS and iPadOS versions.

Inspect the location entry

In Apple's location-metadata guidance, opening a picture in Photos and swiping up or tapping Info reveals its information. When the Camera app has Location Services access, photos can include coordinates. These can be accessible to recipients when the associated location information is shared.

Choose the exact image you intend to use, rather than checking an adjacent photograph from the same shopping trip. If a location entry is visible, decide whether it is needed for the recipient's label question. A nutrition-panel transcription generally needs the product and serving basis, not where you photographed it.

Distinguish changing the photo from changing this share

Apple documents a removal route through the photo's More menu, Adjust Info, Adjust Location, then No Location. For a Photos share, the documented route is Share, Options, then switch off Location. Follow the options actually available on your version. These are different actions: changing a share option should not be treated as proof that the original library item was changed.

For a fictional exercise, suppose you are preparing a soup-label photo for a support question. Keep a private original. Prepare the share copy with the ingredient text, product name and serving heading still readable, then check the location option for the route you intend to use.

Verify the actual copy

  1. Open the prepared image and confirm that the relevant label text remains intact.
  2. Inspect the saved or exported copy's available information, not only the original's preview.
  3. Check that the selected attachment is the prepared copy, with no extra images.
  4. If you cannot verify the final copy's location information, mark that check unresolved.

Different sharing and export routes can handle file information differently. A setting in Photos does not document every third-party upload route, and cropping alone does not establish that all metadata is absent. No private image needs to be uploaded to this site to perform the check.

This process also does not undo an earlier share. It prepares a new copy for a particular purpose, with a clear record of what you checked.
