Why two weighed packs of the same food can have different barcode data

Recognize a possible variable-measure retail label and preserve the full code, pack quantity and price instead of guessing a barcode format.

Two cheese packs can have the same product description but different weights and different barcode data. A differing code does not, on its own, prove that the recipe changed. First establish whether the retailer uses a variable-measure label and what information its code represents.

Keep product identity and pack data separate

GS1 describes variable-measure trade items as carrying an identification number together with variable information. At retail, the barcode can contain the item's price or quantity. That description does not provide a universal rule for which digits mean which field in every retail label.

Record the complete printed code exactly as shown. Alongside it, keep the product name, retailer, quantity with unit, unit price and total pack price as separate visible fields. Do not remove leading digits or replace part of the code to make two records match.

Work through two fictional packs

Visible label fieldPack APack B
Product descriptionSame cheese descriptionSame cheese description
Net quantity0.400 kg0.600 kg
Unit price$10/kg$10/kg
Pack price$4.00$6.00

The visible arithmetic is consistent: 0.400 × 10 = 4 and 0.600 × 10 = 6. This checks the written quantity and price. It does not show whether either barcode encodes weight, price or a particular identification scheme. No barcode digits are invented for this example.

Suppose a lookup returns a generic cheese entry for one pack and no result for the other. Preserve both observations. Do not copy the first result onto the second merely because the descriptions resemble each other, and do not diagnose a printing error solely from a failed lookup.

Ask for the scheme when it matters

The precise question for the retailer is: “Does this weighed-pack code contain price or quantity, and which identification scheme is used?” Until that is confirmed, the visible pack label is the evidence for this pack's quantity and price. Similar code segments are not enough to construct a decoder.

This check also cannot certify authenticity or determine the current recipe. Ingredient and nutrition information still need to match the actual package. A retailer-specific code format may require handling that a particular app does not offer.

Evaluate the app against the pack you buy
