When does the updated US healthy food claim apply?

Separate the start date from the compliance deadline for the updated US healthy claim, then record which criteria support the package you are checking.

A package marked healthy may have been designed during a transition between two US labeling standards. The date a new rule takes effect and the date manufacturers must comply are different facts. Checking that distinction helps you ask a better question than whether a package looks old or new.

Put the two dates on your note

Checked on October 19, 2026: the FDA consumer factsheet says companies choosing to use the claim could begin using the updated standards on April 28, 2025 and need to follow the updated definition by February 25, 2028. The February 2025 effective-date notice explains that delaying the effective date did not change the compliance date. These dates concern the US nutrient-content claim, not an app score or a personal endorsement.

The FDA criteria overview describes food-group amounts and limits for added sugars, saturated fat and sodium, with category-specific details and qualifying exceptions. One favorable nutrient number cannot establish that a product meets all applicable conditions.

A transition-period package check

Imagine you save a fictional snack package photo in October 2026. It says healthy, but the manufacturer page does not explain which criteria support the claim. Your photo date falls after the new standards became available and before the compliance deadline. That timeline alone does not tell you which criteria the manufacturer used.

Make a short record with four fields:

  • Exact claim and nearby explanatory text.
  • Product name, market, pack size and the package version you photographed.
  • Date you observed it, kept separate from any manufacturing date.
  • Manufacturer explanation of the criteria used, or criteria not established.

A useful inquiry is: Which healthy-claim criteria support this specific US package, and where can I find the supporting explanation? Avoid sending only a cropped word; the product category and surrounding wording can matter. A response about a different recipe does not settle the question for yours.

Keep the result narrow

Do not relabel an uncertain package as compliant or noncompliant from the timeline alone. Likewise, a food without this voluntary claim is not automatically unsuitable. Your practical result is a dated, product-specific explanation or a clearly recorded unanswered question.
