Check whether an AI ingredient explanation is supported by its sources

Break an explanation into testable claims and distinguish an ingredient definition from unsupported product-specific conclusions.

An ingredient explanation can sound precise while its citation supports only part of the sentence. Check each claim against the source it cites. A link to an authoritative organization is useful only when the linked material actually addresses the statement.

Split the explanation into claims

Separate the ingredient's identity, possible technological functions, quantity in the product and any claimed effect. These need different evidence. A general description of an ingredient cannot establish how much of it a particular recipe contains.

The FDA's types-of-food-ingredients guide gives examples of ingredient functions and notes that an ingredient can have more than one purpose. Use that kind of reference for a documented general function, while keeping a specific manufacturer's formulation question separate.

Compare the wording with the evidence

Imagine a fictional AI explanation that says a named substance is used as an emulsifier, makes up 2% of this snack and guarantees a better texture. Treat those as three claims. A reference listing an emulsifying use might support the first. It does not establish the 2% quantity or a guaranteed result for this snack.

Write a claim table with supported, unsupported and unclear states. For supported claims, save the relevant source section. For unsupported claims, note what evidence would be required, such as a manufacturer-provided quantity. Do not turn the missing evidence into an inferred estimate.

Check the ingredient match

Confirm that the source refers to the exact substance or category on the package. A similar name, abbreviation or translated word may refer to something broader or different. Preserve any source qualifier and the surrounding ingredient phrase while checking the match.

Also inspect whether the explanation shifts from a possible function to a definite role in this product. Wording such as can help stabilize a mixture is narrower than used here to stabilize this mixture. Keep the narrower wording unless product-specific evidence supports the stronger statement.

End with a revised explanation containing only supported claims and visible uncertainties. Avoid adding a health score or food-safety verdict from a substance's name alone. Save the original AI output separately from your checked version so the correction can be audited. The aim is a useful, bounded explanation that a reader can verify, not a longer paragraph made convincing by unrelated citations.
