Identify the basis of an EU source-of-fibre claim
Work through the two alternative EU source-of-fibre criteria and record which numerical route your label information can support.
A food can meet the numerical condition for an EU source-of-fibre claim by more than one route. Checking only fibre grams per 100 g can therefore leave your explanation incomplete. Record both the weight-based amount and the relationship between fibre and energy before deciding which calculation is relevant.
Keep the two routes separate
The Annex to Regulation (EC) 1924/2006 specifies at least 3 g fibre per 100 g or at least 1.5 g fibre per 100 kcal. These are alternatives. Claims concern the food ready for consumption according to the manufacturer's instructions, so do not combine dry-product fibre with prepared-product energy.
Calculate two contrasting examples
Assume these are fictional foods already ready to eat, with exact practice values for the same 100 g quantity. They are not tested products or declarations of legal compliance.
| Example | Fibre per 100 g | Energy per 100 g | Fibre per 100 kcal |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 2.4 g | 120 kcal | 2.4 ÷ 120 × 100 = 2 g |
| B | 3.2 g | 400 kcal | 3.2 ÷ 400 × 100 = 0.8 g |
A falls below 3 g per 100 g but exceeds 1.5 g per 100 kcal. B reaches the weight-based threshold while falling below the energy-based threshold. Each meets one numerical route under the stated assumptions. Requiring both would change the rule and incorrectly reject these examples.
Record the route you can actually establish
Use a note with four entries: fibre amount, food quantity, energy amount for that same quantity, and calculation route. If the energy value is missing, the energy route remains unavailable. If a source provides energy only in kilojoules, do not insert that number into a formula labeled per 100 kcal.
Where values sit close to a threshold, rounded package numbers may not settle the underlying result. Keep your conclusion as a calculation from the available declarations and request suitable manufacturer information if a precise claim assessment is needed. A worksheet is not a substitute for the other applicable conditions.
Also keep source of fibre distinct from high fibre; this article evaluates only the former numerical conditions. Neither route provides a personal fibre target or a complete ranking of foods.
