Keep a refundable deposit separate from the food price

Track a fictional drink deposit as money paid today and a conditional refund later, without assuming every container will be returned.

A deposit changes the money you hand over at checkout even when you expect to recover it later. Keep the drink price, deposit paid and refund actually received in separate fields. Combining them too early can make a comparison look cheaper than your current cash outlay.

Build a three-part cost record

Imagine a fictional scheme where a 500 mL drink costs USD 2.00 plus a USD 0.25 deposit per container. For this exercise, a returned eligible container receives the full USD 0.25 refund. This is an invented scheme, not a statement of deposit law or a promise from a retailer. Assume no taxes, fees or return-trip costs.

You buy two containers: the drinks cost USD 4.00, deposits cost USD 0.50, and checkout payment is USD 4.50. Together the containers hold 1 litre.

Record or scenarioCalculationAmount for the two drinks
Drink price alone2 times USD 2.00USD 4.00
Cash paid at checkoutUSD 4.00 plus USD 0.50USD 4.50
After both refunds are actually receivedUSD 4.50 minus USD 0.50USD 4.00
After only one refund is receivedUSD 4.50 minus USD 0.25USD 4.25

If neither refund has arrived, the recorded payment remains USD 4.50. You may keep USD 4.00 as a conditional after-refund scenario, but label the condition. An intention to return containers is not evidence that money has been recovered.

Choose the cost basis before dividing by volume

The NIST Unit Pricing Guide explains comparison on a common unit of measure. Here, your drink-only comparison is USD 4.00 per litre, while your checkout-outlay comparison is USD 4.50 per litre. Name the basis in the heading so the reader knows why the numbers differ.

These are personal worksheet calculations. They do not determine how a shop is legally required to display deposits or unit prices. When comparing with another drink, use the same cost basis for both and preserve any different container volumes.

Check the refund terms you can actually use

For a real purchase, find the applicable return location, container requirements, proof needed and refund method. Leave unknown terms unresolved. If a return involves another expense, record that separately instead of quietly assuming it costs nothing. Keep the refund receipt or transaction record when it occurs.

To explore the drink's food label, install Ingredi AI through the App Store or Google Play when available for your device. Keep this deposit worksheet alongside the package; a food-label interpretation does not establish refund eligibility or recover the deposit.
