Check a coupon threshold before assigning savings to one food
Compare a planned basket with two coupon-qualifying alternatives, then label any item-level discount allocation as your own accounting assumption.
A basket coupon can reduce the price of a qualifying order while still making you spend more than originally planned. Check the threshold and the extra purchases together. Then decide whether you need an item-level allocation at all: a discount applied to the basket is not automatically a discount on your favourite food.
Keep the original plan in the worksheet
Use an invented coupon: USD 5 off at least USD 30 of eligible goods, measured before tax and fees, once per order. Assume all goods below are eligible, the code is valid and accepted, and there are no taxes or fees in this exercise. No real retailer's terms are implied.
| Choice | Goods before coupon | Coupon applied | Payable total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original planned basket | USD 28 | USD 0: below threshold | USD 28 |
| Add a USD 2 item | USD 30 | USD 5 | USD 25 |
| Add a USD 8 item instead | USD 36 | USD 5 | USD 31 |
The USD 2 addition lowers this hypothetical payment by USD 3 compared with the original plan. The USD 8 addition raises it by USD 3. Both qualifying baskets receive a USD 5 discount, but they do not have the same effect on your spending. Whether an extra item is useful is another question that the arithmetic cannot settle.
If you allocate the discount, name the method
Suppose the USD 30 basket includes a food priced at USD 6. An optional editorial allocation distributes the coupon in proportion to each item's pre-coupon eligible price. That food represents 6 divided by 30, or 20% of the basket, so it receives USD 1 of the USD 5 discount in your worksheet. Its allocated cost is USD 5.
The remaining goods cost USD 24 before the coupon and receive the remaining USD 4 allocation, leaving USD 20. USD 5 plus USD 20 reconciles to the USD 25 payment. This method is your bookkeeping choice, not a claim about the retailer's receipt, refund rules or official unit prices.
Replace assumptions with the actual offer
The FTC's online-shopping advice recommends checking deal terms and the full cost, including extra charges. For a real coupon, confirm which goods count toward the threshold, when it is measured and whether other discounts change eligibility. Preserve the original basket total so a larger purchase is not automatically reported as money saved.
