Keep best-before and use-by wording tied to the applicable country

Use current UK guidance to separate safety and quality date wording, without turning a package comparison into a personal food-safety decision.

Two packages can print the same calendar date and still communicate different things. In a UK label-reading exercise, keep use by and best before in separate fields instead of replacing both with expires. That shortcut loses the distinction before you have even considered the storage instructions.

Start with the UK meaning

GOV.UK's current date-label guidance relates use-by dates to food safety and best-before dates to quality. It also warns that unsuitable storage can make food unsafe before its use-by date. The printed date is therefore part of the information to read, not a complete account of what has happened to a package.

Compare two fictional packages

Imagine an unopened chilled salad labeled Use by 19 October 2027 and an unopened packet of dried pasta labeled Best before 19 October 2027, both sold in the UK. These are invented examples for reading practice, not recommendations about actual products.

A useful comparison says the calendar dates match but the date categories differ. It should not say that both foods become unsafe at the same moment. Equally, calling best before a quality date does not assess a particular package's condition, handling or suitability for an individual.

Do not merge different markets or handling states

If an overseas product uses a phrase such as best if used by, retain that exact phrase and check the relevant local guidance. This UK exercise does not establish a worldwide dictionary of date terminology. A translation that shortens every phrase to expiry may hide information you need to recover.

Keep the handling state visible too. The unopened package example does not decide what applies after opening, cooking, freezing or defrosting. Those situations require the actual package instructions and applicable handling guidance. Do not create a new deadline merely by changing the wording in your notes.

Make the note useful to the next reader

Save the country of sale, exact phrase, full date, storage wording and a readable photograph together. If the image cuts off the phrase, mark the category unreadable. A clear number without its label is still an incomplete record. When asking the manufacturer for clarification, send the complete context rather than only the date.

For everyday label exploration, install Ingredi AI through the App Store or Google Play if available for your device. Review the current features and offer before choosing a plan. Use the package and official guidance to check any date interpretation; this worksheet does not grant permission to eat a particular food.
