Anti-caking agents: what the powder-handling label tells you
Understand the clumping-related function without treating it as a moisture measurement or a product-quality verdict.
An anti-caking agent is associated with how particles behave together. You may encounter the term when reading a powdered or granular food. The useful question is what function is declared, not whether the unfamiliar name can be turned into a simple good-or-bad verdict.
Read the physical task
The EU functional-class definition describes reducing particles' tendency to stick to one another. See Annex I of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008. This concerns a handling property of the food. It is not a measurement of the package's water content or a promise that a powder can never form a lump.
Copy the category and the substance together. If the package gives only a specific ingredient name, do not add a product-specific function merely because a reference lists anti-caking as one of that substance's possible uses. Note the difference between “function printed on label” and “possible function found in reference.”
Make a practical storage record
Imagine a hypothetical seasoning powder whose label names an anti-caking agent. Record the ingredient wording and, separately, the package's instruction about closing or storing the container. If you later observe clumps, add the observation and the circumstances rather than rewriting the ingredient entry as “ineffective.”
The ingredient list alone does not tell you how the product was stored before you saw it, whether the container remained sealed, or how the manufacturer assessed the finished formulation. Those missing details limit the conclusion you can draw from a single visual observation.

- For identity, use the exact ingredient name or code.
- For the declared task, use the accompanying function wording.
- For handling, use the actual package instructions.
- For nutrient quantities, use the nutrition declaration.
A powder without the category word is not automatically easier or harder to pour than one that includes it. Likewise, counting anti-caking ingredients does not reveal their amounts. If you are making a shopping note, a precise statement such as “this package declares an anti-caking function” is supportable. An explanation claiming a particular dose, production fault, or overall health effect would require evidence beyond this vocabulary lookup.
